Volunteers Help To Keep History Alive
The only papers I check out on an ongoing basis are the local papers as they report on local happenings. In reading last week's Cosmos a commentary from Carol Johnson caught my eye.
Carol is a member of the Uxbridge Historical Society the fund raising and volunteer arm of the Uxbridge Historical Centre.
Her concern is the number of board members who are resigning and the problem of finding someone to fill their shoes.
As those that work tirelessly at preserving our Hstory and Heritage age; they sometimes feel the need to give up their commitments for health or personal reasons. In order to continue their work new faces, hands and minds are always needed.

Is This The Year Of Like Pictures In An Old Photo Album Without Volunteers to Help Keep History Alive Will The Past Simply Fade Into The past?
"A Number of Historical societies in Ontario have disbanded from lack of support. Don't let that happen Here. The Uxbridge Scott Historical Society's 40 years of success is too important to end now" from the commentary "Is This The Last Heritage Days Event?" by Carol Johnston in the Cosmos for more information |

The Society is group of volunteers interested in preserving, and who work to preserve our history and our heritage for future generations. They apply for grants, run events like The Heritage Days, hold meetings for guest speakers, and assist with many odd jobs around the centre.

HI Kathy,
It seems to be an issue with many volunteer and service organizations, this may in fact become a real issue before to long as more and more of the boomers become seniors, by 2020 the scale will really tip over and the increased number of people that will need services, won't be able to get access to them......
It is not a happy picture, but a one that we are all going to be affected by ( unless we find ways to add millions of much yourger people to Canada over the next 5-10 years.)
Kathy,
It does seem "young" people do not care about the past...only the here and now!
Ann Hayden in Wildwood, MO
Kathy - that special effect of your photo is AWESOME - how'd you do it?
I hope that others will help replace the retiring members - there's so much to be learned from history.
Sometimes volunteers work so hard at keeping everything afloat, there is no time left over for recruitment.
Peter and Linda - seniors or near seniors play a very big part role in our community with many organizations relying on their (the seniors) volunteer hours to help provide the community with the organizations services.
Ann - sad but in many cases true. However there are many young people who also give of themselves tirelessly to the beterment of the community as a whole.
Juli - history is a great teacher ..... I sent you a message about the picture
Mona - hopefully the article in the paper and posts like this will help.
Kathy, volunteering can be a hard task as we get older. If only the younger generation cared about the history...perhaps they do and will volunteer.
Kathy, living in a small town, I am finding that most of our volunteers are older. We need to engage the next generation.
Rebecca - Uxbridge has grown significantly since we moved here years ago and much of that growth is younger families with no ties to local history ..... but preserving history is just one aspect of our historical buildings another is the tourism that they bring into town and the opportunity for summer employment for local students. ..... We have a booth at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto promoting Uxbridge and in particular the Leaskdale Manse that was the home of Lucy Maude Montgomery a well known Canadian author (Anne of Green Gables)
Chris - indeed and Uxbridge does through summer employment opportunities such as the booth at the CNE and some of our local historical buildings.
Kathy, this can be a tough problem, but I know when folks are asked they often respond. Best of luck to this great organization engaging a new generation!
Cal
I love how the picture fades in and out!! This is definitely a problem in all communities.
Cal - the new generation is our future but it would be a shame if they loose the past
Debra - lets hope it does not reflect what could happen
